Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
