European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
