New research suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
